DVD Review Doctor Who The Reign of Terror Doctor Who: The Reign of Terror 1-DVD (148 min) Released by BBC Home Entertainment on February 12, 2013. SRP $24.98 (DVD) Subtitles: English SDH 4:3 Mono (Main Feature) When I first got the opportunity to watch the Hartnell era episodes of Doctor Who it was the omnibus versions of the complete stories on PBS. As a young man and as much as I had always wanted to see these stories I initially found them to be a little boring especially when they were all seen in one go. A few years later I got into tape trading and was able to get these stories from WQEX in Pittsburgh in episodic format. I instantly loved the stories much more than I ever did before. These stories broken up in proper episodic format make it so much better to watch. I love the cliffhangers and the ones for the Hartnell stories are unique. You can read about my adventure with all of that here . As I started to get the stories that werent on PBS, there was one story that I saw whi...

DVD Review Sherlock Holmes Starring Douglas Wilmer Sir Arthur Conan Doyles Sherlock Holmes 4-DVD set   (Main Feature: 650 min) Released by the BFI on March 30, 2015. SRP 39.99 (DVD) Subtitles, 1.33:1, Dolby Digital 1.0 Mono Black & White This is a Region 2 DVD only available from the UK and in the PAL format. Content: I am pretty excited because this is my first review for a release from the BFI. I have long been a fan of their releases especially when it has come to their archive television sets on DVD going way back to The Stone Tape (released on DVD in 2001) and recently picked up The Year of the Sex Olympics because for some reason I have never picked it up. The last couple of years I have been going BFI release crazy by picking up such gems as Dead of Night , Ghost Stories for Christmas , The Boy from Space , The Changes , Supernatural , Out of This World and ending out the year with one of the greatest archive releases of all-time , Out of the Unknown . This 7 DVD se...

DVD Recommendation Hidden Figures Starring Taraji P Henson The award winning film Hidden Figures , directed and co-written by Theodore Melfi, is a fact based drama about the struggles of well educated African American females who worked for NASA during the Space Race. The film is based on a book, of the same name, by Margot Lee Shetterly, and centers around a trio of strong women who endured despite being held back due to their skin color and gender. Each of the three principal characters, Katherine Johnson (Taraji P. Henson), Mary Jackson (Janelle Monae) and Dorothy Vaughan (Octavia Spencer), has a chance to shine as their unique stories unfold. Katherine Johnson works as a "computer" in a segregated section of NASA and receives a promotion to the Space Task Group after the Russians successfully launch astronauts into space. The United States is falling behind their Soviet counterparts and pressure is placed on the leader of the group, Al Harrison (Kevin Costner), to catch u...

DVD Review Midsomer Murders Series 1 Midsomer Murders: Series 1 DVD 3-Discs (529 minutes) Released by Acorn Media on July 30, 2013. SRP $59.99 (DVD) Subtitles: English SDH Letterbox One thing I am really happy about is that Acorn Media has re-released the first 5 Series of Midsomer Murders . Since I started to review this series, I have become enamored with it. I originally started much later on the series. I found it to be pretty incredible when I started to watch it but I was curious to see how the series started. I wanted to know more. This was my chance to do so. This re-release of Series One may be one of the first times that the episodes had been released in UK broadcast order. I am not quite sure how they had been released before but I am a big fan of things being released the way they are intended to be seen. This is how it always should be in my opinion. I wasnt sure what to expect from the beginning.   I wasnt sure if this was a proper first episode (like a beginning to...

DVD Review Lovejoy Series 3 Lovejoy Series 3 DVD - 4 Discs (693 min) Released by Acorn Media on October 28, 2014. SRP $49.99 (DVD) I remember many years ago when the cable network A&E actually showed program that were from beyond the realm of reality TV. It is a point of interest, because it is for me a reminder that you should never take for granted what you have because it may be gone before you know it. A&E showed a lot of great television. The station was known as Arts & Entertainment, I am not sure what it is known for now. I may have been a bit of a snob because the programs they showed often also shown on PBS so I didnt want to see these series with commercial breaks and logos plastered all over it. Back then, logos plastered all over was just one logo in the corner, nothing like what we are forced with now. Anyway, they would show some amazing series such as Yes, Prime Minister , Black Adder , All Creatures Great and Small which were all series I would watch on PBS...
