Content: I am pretty excited because this is my first review for a release from the BFI. I have long been a fan of their releases especially when it has come to their archive television sets on DVD going way back to The Stone Tape (released on DVD in 2001) and recently picked up The Year of the Sex Olympics because for some reason I have never picked it up. The last couple of years I have been going BFI release crazy by picking up such gems as Dead of Night , Ghost Stories for Christmas , The Boy from Space , The Changes , Supernatural , Out of This World and ending out the year with one of the greatest archive releases of all-time , Out of the Unknown . This 7 DVD se...

DVD Recommendation Hidden Figures Starring Taraji P Henson

DVD Recommendation Hidden Figures Starring Taraji P Henson The award winning film Hidden Figures , directed and co-written by Theodore Melfi, is a fact based drama about the struggles of well educated African American females who worked for NASA during the Space Race. The film is based on a book, of the same name, by Margot Lee Shetterly, and centers around a trio of strong women who endured despite being held back due to their skin color and gender. Each of the three principal characters, Katherine Johnson (Taraji P. Henson), Mary Jackson (Janelle Monae) and Dorothy Vaughan (Octavia Spencer), has a chance to shine as their unique stories unfold. Katherine Johnson works as a "computer" in a segregated section of NASA and receives a promotion to the Space Task Group after the Russians successfully launch astronauts into space. The United States is falling behind their Soviet counterparts and pressure is placed on the leader of the group, Al Harrison (Kevin Costner), to catch u...

DVD Recommendation Split Starring James McAvoy

DVD Recommendation Split Starring James McAvoy Writer/director M. Night Shyamalan tackles Dissociative Identity Disorder in his latest thriller, Split , starring James McAvoy. Shyamalan captures some of his former magic with Split , which was a huge box office hit earlier this year. McAvoy portrays the title character, Kevin Wendell Crumb, who exhibits at least 23 personalities and is in the care of Dr. Karen Fletcher (Betty Buckley), a psychiatrist who has great empathy for Kevin because of his challenges with serious mental illness. The illness is allegedly the result of child abuse and the many personalities are Kevins way of dealing with his pain. Some of the personalities are more dominant that others, while one is kept at bay for reasons that will be revealed late in the film.  In the opening scene, Kevin kidnaps three teenage girls who he believes have led charmed lives and have not suffered like he and so many others have. His plans are muddled because of his other personal...

DVD Recommendation La La Land Starring Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling

DVD Recommendation La La Land Starring Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling La La Land was the recipient of six Academy Awards, including Best Director (Damien Chazelle) and Best Actress (Emma Stone), earlier this year and is now available on DVD and On Demand. The musical effort is a love letter to Los Angeles and features a perfect mix of retro and contemporary elements. Chazelle is a clever director and defies viewers to pinpoint a time frame for the events of the film, at least until Mia Dolans (Stone) cell phone rings and chimes. Those sounds brings viewers into the present day, only to drawn back to the past with references to Old Hollywood and a jazz infused soundtrack that sounds both retro and fresh at the same time, if that is even possible. This story is about love and having dreams of a bright and successful future. Mia is an aspiring actress and Sebastian (Ryan Gosling) is a creative musician who has much potential, but also hates taking orders from others, thus causing him to fli...
